[ARCHIVED] Board buzz about backing beekeepers

Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors was humming over a proposal to construct a Township apiary heard at its March 7 meeting. The plan, which calls for creating a securely fenced beekeeping area near hole 12 of Cranberry Highlands Golf Course, would begin with two Township-owned hives and eventually expand to accommodate those from independent beekeepers from around the area. The mission of the apiary is to become a community resource for education about pollination and beekeeping. It is also part of Cranberry Highlands’ Audubon Sanctuary certification program. It would be partially supported by funds raised from honey sales at the pro shop. The beekeeping project, with support from the independent Burgh Bees organization, is being led by Mason Miller of the Township’s Public Works department, himself a beekeeper whose father and grandfather also maintain hives in the state’s rural northwest.
