Road Projects
Franklin Road Safety Improvement Project
PennDOT will improve the Franklin Road corridor from Route 228 to Peters Road. This project includes updating the current two-lane roadway to current design standards, including 5’ shoulders for bikes and pedestrians. Left turn lanes will be added at key intersections throughout the corridor. The project does not include improvements to the intersection with Route 228. PennDOT awarded this contract for construction in December 2023 to Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc.
The four-year project includes:
- 2024 - Installation of E&S Controls and tree clearing necessary for aerial utility relocations to be performed
- 2025 - Underground utility relocations
- 2026 - Reconstruction/widening from Route 228 to approximately 200 feet north of Hazelwood Drive, a portion of Mars Road, and Hillmont Drive
- 2027 - Reconstruction/widening from approximately 200 feet north of Hazelwood Drive to Peters Road
Freedom Road Expansion and Improvement Projects
Since 2020, the Township in conjunction with Butler County received two U.S. Department of Transportation grants through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program.
BUILD 1
The first project expanded Freedom Road from Commonwealth Drive to Haine School Road. Using a $20 million BUILD grant, construction wrapped in late 2022.
BUILD 2
The second phase is using a $25 million BUILD grant to expand Freedom Road from Haine School Road to Powell Road. Work began in 2022 and is ongoing. It has an estimated completion date of 2025.
Freedom Road Turnpike Bridge
These projects follow the full replacement and expansion of the Freedom Road Turnpike Bridge, which was completed in 2021. Work included a new steel beam six-lane bridge, widening, paving, drainage, signal upgrade/replacement, and lighting work. As part of the accelerated bridge construction program, the structure was built in sections off-site and moved into its final position, requiring only short-term closures on the PA Turnpike or Freedom Road.
Rochester Road Turnpike
Bridge Expansion
The Rochester Road Turnpike Project aims to upgrade the Turnpike from milepost 26 to 28. In addition to expanding lanes along Rochester Road, work includes widening the existing corridor from four lanes to six lanes and making general corridor improvements. A feasibility study will determine how best to add lanes to Rochester Road and make the road pedestrian-friendly. This project is in its early stages.
Past Projects
Over the past several years, many major projects have been completed through cooperation with PennDOT, Butler County, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
MSA Thruway
The MSA Thruway connects Interstate 79 to destinations in Cranberry Springs and Cranberry Woods beneath Route 228. A roundabout at the approach to the tunnel from I-79 directs traffic flow and moderates speeds for the pedestrian-friendly passageway. The project includes sidewalks and bike lanes.
Rochester Road Expansion
This widening project on the stretch of Rochester Road between Route 19 and Graham School Road also added numerous pedestrian-friendly features along the way.
Interstate 79 Bridge Replacement Over North Boundary Road
This project replaced two structures carrying Interstate 79 over North Boundary Road.
Progress Avenue and Route 19 Intersection Improvements
This project improved the intersection of Route 19 and Progress Avenue, including widening Progress Avenue, traffic signal installation, and a new turning lane.
Route 19/Short Street
The Route 19 and Short Street signal replacement project replaced one of the oldest signals in the Township to bring it up to current standards.
